History

Our Origins

Verdicchio since 1956
The Brunori family has always produced wine from Verdicchio grapes. Originally from the nearby town of Cupramontana, a symbol of great white wines and quality sparkling wines, in 1956 Mario and his son Giorgio Brunori founded their own winery in the village of San Paolo di Jesi, soon becoming a reference point for bottled product, particularly rare at the time. In the same year the Brunori family inaugurated a wine shop in Jesi, truly ahead of its time in those years. The new sales outlet would become a showcase for wine production in the town where Emperor Frederick II of Swabia was born, and which was experiencing a portentous industrial expansion in those very years.

The first Verdicchio Cru was born in 1976
With the 1975 grape harvest, Brunori made the first Cru in his own cellar, and he presented it to the market the following year. This wine would be renamed San Nicolò, after the district where the vineyard and winery are located. The uniqueness of the first Cru of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Doc Classico Superiore is glaring: this white wine, best known for the original and sinuous shape of the amphora bottle, but still associated in common opinion with a ready and easy-drinking product, passes into the typical Bordeaux bottle and a new way of understanding Verdicchio emerges.

Luigi Veronelli falls in love with Verdicchio

Recognition did not take long to arrive. Among the first to grasp the value of San Nicolò, the potential of Verdicchio and the change of pace that would bring this white wine to the Olympus of Italy's best wines, was the famous journalist and oenogastronomer Luigi Veronelli, ‘the inventor of wine critics’, who would initiate a stable correspondence with the Brunori family, singing its praises on numerous public occasions as well as in sector guides, and carrying out a precious activity of dissemination that would ennoble Verdicchio on the national scene. More than half a century later, Verdicchio is today, the most awarded white wine in Italy and Cru San Nicolò is still the Brunori family's flagship label.

Values

Respect for nature, the land and biodiversity.

The family business dimension is above all a choice of values. The company's objective has always been to maintain direct control over the entire production chain. In the vineyards, we protect biodiversity through exclusively organic fertilisation; mechanical weed control and the green manure technique guarantee a high level of organic matter in the soil. These vineyard management choices make Brunori's production sustainable from an agronomic point of view, while the use of solar energy in the cellar, through a state-of-the-art photovoltaic system and the thermal insulation of the cellar itself (made with exclusively natural materials), make production with a low environmental impact.
